NGTI IN NEW DEAL TO SUPPORT MAJOR AWARD IN SPAIN

Published: 19 October 2006

NGTI (National Geographic Television International) has concluded a deal with Spanish terrestrial broadcaster TVE for a package of programmes that exemplify the work of the National Geographic Society.

The National Geographic Society has been awarded the Communication and Humanities Award in the prestigious Prince of Asturias Awards, which were established by the King of Spain’s son in 1980 to acknowledge scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out internationally by individuals, groups or organisations across eight categories.  Other winners this year include UNICEF, Paul Auster, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Pedro Almodovar.

The award will be presented on Friday 20th October in Oviedo, when TVE will air on La2 MISSION EARTH (1 x 52), a programme about the work of the National Geographic Society from its inception to the present day.  Later on the same day they will air the high-profile SEARCH FOR THE AFGHAN GIRL (1 x 52) on TVE1.

During the following week TVE will also transmit THUNDERBEAST (1 x 52), tracking a bison herd for a year in Yellowstone National Park, REFLECTIONS ON ELEPHANTS (1 x 52), a Jouberts’ documentary for NGT investigating African elephant society, CHIMPS ON THE EDGE (1 x 52) looking at how Africa’s chimp population could be saved and the multi award-winning ARCTIC KINGDOM: LIFE AT THE EDGE (1 x 52), exploring how the native wildlife survives in the harsh Arctic environment.

Margaret Yoshida, NGTI’s sales representative for Spain comments: “We have a long-standing relationship with TVE but are very honoured that they are celebrating the Society’s award in this way.  The Prince of Asturias Awards are a significant event in Spain and through TVE’s support, some of our most impactful programming from the past few years will be shown, giving Spanish viewers a further insight into the mission of the National Geographic Society - inspiring people to care about their world.”
